Redemption Crisis Hits Ripple ETF: $13.4 Million Loss and Halved Market Value

The 21Shares Ripple ETF (TOXR.US) is facing a severe survival crisis. In the first half of the year, a chain reaction triggered by massive investor redemptions resulted in the fund recording a loss of approximately $13.4 million, leading to a slight contraction in its overall asset size.

The root cause lies in a severe imbalance in capital flows. During the first half, the fund's total redemption payout reached $75 million, while new issuance funds were only $25.5 million, creating a net capital deficit of $49.5 million. Specifically, the fund issued 1.47 million shares but faced a redemption wave of 4.25 million shares. This passive situation forced the manager to sell XRP holdings at a loss. Data shows that this resulted in a realized loss of $13.36 million. Combined with an unrealized depreciation loss of $71.52 million on the remaining holdings, the fund's net asset value suffered a double blow.

Looking at the quarterly rhythm, the first quarter was the peak redemption period, with 4.03 million of the total 4.25 million redemptions concentrated there. The second quarter showed a turnaround, with 480,000 new shares issued and 220,000 shares redeemed between April and June, achieving a net issuance increase of 260,000 shares. However, this fundamental improvement failed to offset the market downside risk. The price of XRP fell by 22.37% during the same period, directly dragging down the fund's net asset value (NAV) by 20.56%. This brief recovery did not translate into a substantial rebound.

Latest data reveals a sluggish recovery. As of August 11, TOXR's total shares outstanding stood at 109.52 million, a mere increase of 10,000 shares from June. In terms of asset size, the latest reported figure of $109.58 million is lower than the $112.9 million at the end of the quarter. This indicates that despite positive net issuance in the second quarter, the fund's size is still shrinking, and rebuilding investor confidence will take time.
