South Korean e-commerce giant Coupang reported a net loss for the second quarter, swinging from a profit in the same period last year, due to a massive fine related to a user data breach. The US-listed company disclosed in a filing that it recorded a net loss of 865 billion Korean won (approximately $570 million) for the three months ending in June, compared to a net profit of 43.5 billion won a year earlier.

The vast majority of Coupang's revenue is derived from its domestic South Korean operations. In November 2025, a data breach at the company compromised the information of over 37 million users, sparking widespread public outrage after the incident was revealed. This June, South Korea's Personal Information Protection Commission issued a record-high fine of 624.7 billion won, citing both the data breach and the unauthorized collection of users' online behavior data as reasons for the penalty.

In the second quarter, revenue from Coupang's core online shopping business, its product commerce segment, grew 1% year-over-year to $7.42 billion. Coupang Chief Financial Officer Gaurav Anand stated during an earnings call, "The product commerce results for this quarter incorporate the recent fine imposed by Korean regulators. The penalty is still subject to judicial review, and the company plans to appeal, but the expense has been recognized in this quarter's results."

Coupang founder and Chairman Kim Beom-seok noted that following the data breach, the vast majority of users who left have since returned, with their spending levels recovering to previous figures. He added that when excluding users who permanently left and did not return after the incident, spending by existing users in the second quarter increased by 16% year-over-year.
