Austal Ltd's stock surged 5.06% during intraday trading on Wednesday, following the announcement of a significant contract extension with the Australian Border Force.
The defence shipbuilder secured an extension to build two additional Evolved Cape-class Patrol Boats, lifting the total contract value to approximately A$150.3 million. This award reinforces Austal's role in Australia's sovereign defence manufacturing base and adds longer-term visibility to its patrol boat production workload and support activities.
While the contract provides incremental support to earnings quality and helps fill the company's defence-focused order pipeline, analysts note that Austal's broader investment narrative remains dependent on the timing of larger defence awards and management of contract margin risks.
