Hyundai Workers Plan Four-Day Partial Strike Amid Wage Dispute

Hyundai Motor's union announced on Tuesday that it will hold a four-day partial strike this week after failing to reach a wage agreement with management.

The union stated it will stage four-hour strikes on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by six-hour strikes on Friday and Sunday. Last month, the union had already conducted a total of 30 hours of partial strikes and refused to work special shifts on four Saturdays, resulting in an estimated production loss of around 42,510 vehicles.

This latest strike action follows the failure of management and the union to narrow their differences on wages. The two sides held their 15th round of negotiations on July 8. The union, representing 40,000 employees, is demanding a monthly basic wage increase of 149,600 South Korean won (approximately $105.6 USD) and a performance bonus equivalent to 30% of the company's net profit from last year. However, the company has proposed a monthly basic wage increase of 80,000 won, a performance bonus equal to 350% of the monthly salary, an additional 10 million won, and 15 company shares.
