Nvidia's upcoming quarterly results are widely expected to be strong, but the market's central question is no longer whether the company will beat estimates. The real issue is whether the company can provide sufficient answers to the market's deeper concerns after an earnings beat. From options pricing to institutional divergence, from the controversy over circular financing to power supply bottlenecks, this earnings report is becoming the litmus test for whether the AI bull market can advance to its next phase.
On Wednesday after the U.S. market close, Nvidia will release its fiscal second-quarter results for FY2027. Wall Street consensus estimates call for quarterly revenue of approximately $92 billion, nearly doubling year-over-year. Adjusted earnings per share are expected at $2.09, with data center revenue projected at roughly $85.4 billion. Jefferies expects revenue to exceed consensus, reaching $95 billion, while Citi has also raised its forecast and maintained a $300 price target. However, Goldman Sachs has warned that with the stock already up over 12% in August, an earnings beat combined with a raised guidance may not be sufficient to drive the share price higher. The company would also need to simultaneously signal improved profitability among hyperscale cloud providers, manageable customer financing, and substantial capital returns.
Options market pricing reflects this caution. According to ORATS data, the implied move in Nvidia's stock around the earnings report is approximately 5.4%, the lowest since August 2021 and significantly below the historical average of 7.4% over the past 12 quarters.
ORATS founder Matt Amberson noted that in the past eight earnings reports, the actual stock price movement has been smaller than the implied options move. He stated that options buyers have been overpaying for this event premium, and prices are now beginning to correct. This suggests that for investors bullish on the AI theme, relatively cheaper options provide an asymmetric entry window. However, if management fails to address the long-term questions the market truly cares about, the low volatility expectation could be disrupted.
Divergence in Earnings Expectations: Both Bulls and Bears Have Conviction
Sell-side institutions are broadly optimistic about the fundamentals of the current quarter, but their divergence centers on the stock price trajectory following the earnings release.
Jefferies projects Nvidia's July quarter revenue at $95 billion, with October quarter guidance around $108 billion, both exceeding market consensus of approximately $91.9 billion and $103.7 billion respectively. Morgan Stanley is relatively more conservative, estimating July quarter revenue of about $91.2 billion and October quarter of roughly $102.3 billion, but believes quarterly revenue could continue to increase by approximately $10 billion sequentially. Citi maintains a Buy rating and a $300 price target, pointing out that Nvidia has secured HBM memory supply for 2026-2027, providing assurance for stable delivery.
Morgan Stanley maintains an Overweight rating and top-pick status with a $288 price target, noting that Nvidia's current price-to-earnings ratio of approximately 17 times FY28 earnings is not expensive compared to its own history, semiconductor peers, or the broader market. However, the firm also emphasizes that over the past four quarters, Nvidia's stock has reacted negatively the day after earnings even when results were strong, indicating that the market has come to treat "beating expectations" as the default scenario.
Prediction market data also reflects this split: the probability of Nvidia beating earnings estimates is priced at 96%, yet the probability of the stock closing above $220 after the report is only 43%.
The Rubin Cycle: The Key Narrative for the Next Valuation Phase
In the near term, demand for Blackwell remains robust. Improvements in Microsoft and Amazon's cloud businesses, along with long-term compute commitments from OpenAI and SpaceX, continue to support confidence in data center revenue. But the market has already shifted its gaze further ahead: whether the Rubin platform can open the next growth curve from a higher base will be the core topic of this earnings call.
Jefferies believes Rubin's ramp-up speed could be significantly faster than Blackwell's early stage. The key reason is that Rubin continues the 72-GPU Oberon NVL72 rack form factor, allowing it to reuse the liquid-cooled data center deployment and manufacturing infrastructure accumulated from GB200 and GB300. The new design also significantly reduces manual cabling and piping installation. Management has previously mentioned that compute tray assembly time could be compressed from approximately 2 hours to 5 minutes. The significance behind this is that Nvidia is transforming AI chips into replicable, scalable "AI factory systems."
Jefferies projects that Rubin/R200's share of Nvidia's GPU revenue will reach approximately 12% in the third quarter of FY2027, rise to over 40% in the fourth quarter, and become the dominant revenue source by the first quarter of FY2028. If this pace materializes, the market's valuation logic will shift from "how much longer can the Blackwell cycle last" to "can Rubin unlock even larger-scale growth."
Circular Financing: The Most Controversial Grey Area
The most likely focal point of this earnings report is the increasingly complex financing arrangements between Nvidia and its hyperscale customers.
According to Jefferies' analysis, Nvidia has reached an arrangement with SB Energy for the latter to build and operate the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Ohio, leased to OpenAI under a 20-year agreement, with Nvidia serving as the exclusive compute provider. Nvidia will provide credit support for the first 4.25GW of IT capacity and hold options on the remaining 3.75GW, while also investing $1.5 billion in SB Energy. Nvidia states that each generation of system deployment at this site corresponds to approximately 1.5 million GPUs, generating $150 billion to $200 billion in revenue. OpenAI's existing and planned commitments total approximately 12GW, expandable to 16GW, corresponding to roughly $600 billion in Nvidia compute purchases before 2030.
However, Morgan Stanley data shows that the five major hyperscale cloud providers, together with Nvidia and Broadcom, have committed over $3.1 trillion through guarantees, leases, and other financial support mechanisms to drive AI infrastructure spending by other companies. This "vendor circular financing" model has become a key issue that Goldman Sachs and other institutions are pressing on: how much of this demand represents customers' organic capital expenditure, and how much requires Nvidia to drive through credit support or investment?
Morgan Stanley believes that financing, market share, and gross margins are the three most contentious issues investors are currently focused on. If management cannot provide clear accounting disclosures on contingent obligations and residual value commitments, market concerns about "exchanging the balance sheet for growth" will be difficult to dispel.
Gross Margins and Power: Two Invisible Pressure Lines
Gross margin is one of the core pillars supporting Nvidia's valuation premium.
Morgan Stanley expects the company to maintain its "mid-70s" gross margin language for FY2027, with near-term pressure manageable. However, medium-to-long-term pressure cannot be ignored: costs for HBM, DRAM, advanced packaging, substrates, and front-end wafer processes continue to rise, and new product ramps typically involve yield and supply chain integration challenges.
Morgan Stanley cautions that the market consensus expectation of a notable gross margin recovery in the second half of FY2028 may be overly optimistic. Additionally, Nvidia has notified major customers including Microsoft, Google, and Oracle that server prices equipped with Vera Rubin and Grace Blackwell chips will rise by more than 15% early next year, driven primarily by rising HBM memory costs.
Power supply is also becoming an increasingly significant constraint.
Jefferies points out that the gap between chip demand expectations and grid supply capacity is widening. Large cloud providers are increasingly partnering with utility companies to build dedicated gas-fired power plants, while frontier AI labs are more frequently adopting "behind-the-meter" power solutions to bridge the timing gap between grid connection and compute deployment. Gas turbines, backup power, and fuel cell solutions are all being pursued, but equipment lead times, grid interconnection approvals, and local regulations will all affect data center construction timelines. This means the pace of converting orders into revenue will become less linear.
Competitive Landscape: Structural Risks to Market Share
Beyond the macro narrative, Nvidia's approximately 90% share of the AI accelerator market is facing multi-front challenges. Cloud giants including Google and Meta are accelerating their in-house AI chip development. Reports indicate that the "Jalapeño" inference chip co-developed by OpenAI and Broadcom has surpassed Nvidia's Blackwell on some benchmark tests. Emerging chip companies such as Cerebras Systems have also completed public listings this year and are competing for market share.
Bespoke Investment Group notes that Nvidia's stock performance has become noticeably disconnected from the semiconductor sector, observing that semiconductor stocks have frequently moved in the opposite direction to Nvidia over the past several months. The PHLX Semiconductor Index has remained subdued since its late-June high, and Nvidia's recent seven-day losing streak was its longest consecutive decline since the start of this bull market in October 2022.
These structural changes in the competitive landscape may represent risk variables that transcend any single quarter's earnings figures and could have a more profound impact on Nvidia's long-term earnings trajectory.
