CK Hutchison Launches International Arbitration Against Panama Over Investment Treaty Breach

CK Hutchison Holdings (00001) has formally initiated international arbitration proceedings against the Republic of Panama on August 20, 2026, citing violations of investment protection treaties, following numerous unsuccessful attempts to reach a negotiated resolution.

The company's action stems from a series of measures adopted by Panama during 2025 and 2026, which ultimately led to the breach of concession contracts for the Balboa and Cristobal ports and the forced seizure of port terminals. In response to the damage inflicted on its investments in the country, CK Hutchison is seeking compensation exceeding US$1.5 billion.

Meanwhile, the company's subsidiary, Panama Ports Company (PPC), will continue to assert its distinct rights under separate arbitration proceedings, conducted in accordance with the concession contracts and the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce. The board has strongly rejected Panama's treaty-violating measures, emphasizing its firm opposition to these actions.

Going forward, CK Hutchison remains committed to pursuing a resolution with Panama while simultaneously safeguarding all of its rights and remedies available under the relevant treaties and international law.
