People's Daily spotlights Xuanwu District with front-page and page-two coverage on culture-tourism and elderly care

On October 7, the final day of the National Day holiday, the People's Daily once again turned its spotlight on Xuanwu District, with its front page and page two respectively focusing on the district's culture-tourism sector and its livelihood services. Though the scenes were entirely different, they shared the same vivid, concrete and authentic quality.

Under the headline "A Thousand Years of Culture, Ties of Home and Country — Observations on Cultural Phenomena During the National Day Holiday," the front page of the People's Daily revisited the booming cultural enthusiasm in Xuanwu during the holiday period.

According to the report, during the holiday many visitors walked into the art museum at Deji Plaza in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, put on smart wristbands and immersed themselves in the "Digital Art Exhibition of the Jinling Scroll." A babbling brook flowed through the woods, a peddler carrying a shoulder pole wound through the market streets, and guests in a teahouse raised their cups in casual conversation — the hustle and bustle of Jinling from a thousand years ago unfolded layer by layer through technological means.

Located on the eighth floor of Deji Plaza, the Deji Art Museum blends art, commerce and technology, continuously building itself into an urban cultural landmark. Among its offerings, the "Digital Art Exhibition of the Jinling Scroll" is one of the most representative and most closely watched permanent exhibitions. Based on the long scroll "Jinling Scroll" painted in 1794 by Qing Dynasty court painter Feng Ning, the exhibition transforms this "encyclopedia" depicting the urban landscape of Song Dynasty Nanjing into a sensory and participatory contemporary experience. The exhibition space is composed of ultra-high-definition LED screens 110 meters long and 3.6 meters high. Visitors put on smart wristbands, choose their own virtual avatars from 533 "people in the painting," and "travel" into the scene, freely exploring among market streets, wharves and teahouses. This globally pioneering interactive mode of "entering the painting as a character with real-time tracking" means visitors are no longer merely viewers of the painting but people who have stepped inside it.

Today, "see the Jinling Scroll first, then tour Nanjing City" has become a consensus among many tourists. As of the first half of this year, the Deji "Digital Art Exhibition of the Jinling Scroll" had received nearly 3 million visits in total, with online exposure exceeding 300 million. Its formula for breaking through lies precisely in transforming historical and cultural heritage into a public cultural experience accessible to all, translating traditional culture into easily understandable contemporary language, and elevating local cultural experiences — thereby activating young audiences and bringing traditional culture from the depths of history to the forefront of the times.

The 13th Party Congress of Xuanwu District proposed building a comprehensive intelligent pioneer zone. The entire district is deeply exploring and transforming its rich cultural tourism resources to enhance residents' and visitors' sense of gain and experience. During this holiday, it further launched an intelligent companion tour platform for the Changjiang Road cultural and museum block, turning technological innovation into perceptible and tangible life consumption scenarios. More intelligent experience projects will be introduced in the future.

A Xuanwu model of "Suitable Jiangsu elderly care"

Page two of the People's Daily, under the headline "Jiangsu Builds a '15-Minute Elderly Care Service Circle' to Support the Happiness of the Elderly (Cultivating More 'China Service' Brands)," turned its attention to an elderly care service scenario in an ordinary residential compound in Xuanwu.

According to the report, early in the morning at her home in Fuguishan No. 2 Compound in Xuanwu District, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, 70-year-old Bai Qiuping propped herself up on the handrail beside her bed. In the bathroom there were a smart toilet and a non-slip shower chair; on the kitchen wall, a smoke detector and a gas alarm showed green lights; the call button at the bedside could be answered with a single press... The home of just over 40 square meters, after age-friendly renovation, offered support at every turn. At noon, Bai Qiuping and her husband walked just five minutes to eat at the meal assistance point of the community elderly care service center.

Jiangsu has a large elderly population base and rapid growth, with all 13 prefecture-level cities having entered a moderately aging society. In September 2021, Jiangsu launched the "Suitable Jiangsu Elderly Care" service brand, promoting the upgrade of elderly care services from "basic guarantees" to "high quality."

A dense elderly care service network — the community elderly care service center that Bai Qiuping and her husband frequently visit is precisely an important part of "Suitable Jiangsu Elderly Care" in solving the fragmented problem of home-based elderly care services and building a "15-minute elderly care service circle."

A person in charge of the elderly care service division of the Nanjing Civil Affairs Bureau introduced that most elderly people prefer home-based elderly care. Since 2021, Nanjing has introduced a "home-based elderly care service list," bringing in third-party institutions to provide age-friendly renovation plans with certain government subsidies, weaving a service network that keeps the elderly comfortable and at ease.

As the "foundation" of the "Suitable Jiangsu Elderly Care" service brand, "aging in place" and "aging in the community" are being steadily advanced: Jiangsu has established more than 20,000 family elderly care beds and completed age-friendly renovations for more than 300,000 households; it has built 531 comprehensive urban subdistrict elderly care service centers and more than 18,000 service stations, achieving full coverage of urban subdistricts.

As a core area of central Nanjing, Xuanwu District has many old residential compounds and a dense elderly population, and the vast majority of elderly people prefer to spend their later years in their familiar homes and communities. However, old compounds generally suffer from aging facilities and low age-friendliness. How to deliver elderly care services to doorsteps and embed them in communities has become a realistic and urgent challenge.

In the home of just over 40 square meters in Fuguishan No. 2 Compound, after age-friendly renovation, the bedside handrail, smart toilet, non-slip shower chair, smoke detector, gas alarm and bedside call button — each seemingly inconspicuous — gave the elderly an extra layer of protection when getting up, bathing, cooking and seeking help. Behind this is Nanjing's introduction since 2021 of a "home-based elderly care service list," bringing in third-party institutions to provide age-friendly renovation plans with government subsidies, delivering services to the elderly's side.

On the basis of age-friendly renovations, Xuanwu District has given full play to its advantage of dense scientific and technological innovation resources, exploring diverse scenarios in intelligent elderly care service projects — adding a line of defense for solitary and empty-nest elderly in a "non-intrusive" way.

Xuanwumen Subdistrict has implemented the "Silver-Haired Carefree, Cloud Guardian" project, with 140 emergency call devices, smoke alarms, gas alarms, infrared monitors and other equipment entering various communities, serving as "digital housekeepers" guarding key elderly individuals. Meiyuan Xincun Subdistrict has piloted millimeter-wave radar monitors in Minggugong Community, with the first batch installed free of charge for 10 elderly people living alone. The devices have no cameras and do not collect images, relying on radar to identify abnormal states such as falls and prolonged lying down, with alerts simultaneously pushed to family members, grid workers and the big data center, supported by a "5-minute emergency response circle."

With home safety issues resolved, the meal problem is also securely covered. As of now, Xuanwu District has built 78 community elderly meal assistance points, with a service network covering 7 subdistricts and 60 communities, achieving full coverage of the "15-minute meal assistance service circle."

A handrail by the bed, a monitor on the wall, a bowl of rice on the plate — Xuanwu is using different methods to bring "care in old age" into every detail of elderly people's lives.

Using technology to make a thousand-year-old Jinling tangible and touchable, and using an elderly care service network to support daily life — this is Xuanwu grounding urban development in human experience and in the details of life.

Such a Xuanwu deserves to be seen.
