OpenAI has announced that its second-in-command, Chief Operating Officer Fidji Simo, who oversaw product and commercial operations, will not return to her full-time role following a medical leave due to a deterioration in her health. Instead, she will transition to a part-time advisory position. This move signifies another shift in the executive ranks at the tech company, which is preparing for its initial public offering (IPO).
In an internal letter to employees, Simo stated that the worsening of her neuroimmune condition has resulted in a recovery period far exceeding expectations, forcing her to make what she described as the most difficult career decision. Simo, the former CEO of Instacart and a former Meta executive, joined OpenAI in August last year. She was responsible for the product and commercial divisions, directly overseeing the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Revenue Officer, and was widely viewed as a key candidate to lead the company post-IPO. Her medical leave in April had already raised concerns among investors and staff about the company's direction.
OpenAI is currently facing dual pressures from product transformation and intense market competition. Influenced by the strong lead of its main competitor, Anthropic, in the enterprise market, user growth for ChatGPT has stagnated since late last year, causing the company to miss its internal revenue targets. In response, OpenAI has recently made urgent strategic adjustments, cutting back on peripheral projects, including the video generation application Sora, to focus fully on developing AI programming tools for enterprise users. On the same day, the company launched its core restructuring project: a "super app" dedicated to programming.
Market analysis indicates that Anthropic has recently surpassed OpenAI in valuation for the first time and has become the preferred choice for most enterprises deploying AI tools. To compete for enterprise clients, the two companies are now engaged in a fierce price war, which is further delaying their paths to profitability and potentially impacting their respective IPO timelines. During this week's Sun Valley annual summit, OpenAI's executive team held intensive discussions on how to counter Anthropic in the enterprise market with new products.
To address the leadership gap left by Simo's departure, OpenAI announced that her former product and commercial responsibilities will be shared by President Greg Brockman, Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar, and Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon. Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser will now report directly to President Brockman. CEO Sam Altman now faces the task of finding a replacement to stabilize the management structure during this critical phase as the company pushes toward its public listing.
