Yangjiang Qingzhou Offshore Wind Project Achieves Major Milestone with World-Record Subsea Cable

A significant milestone has been reached in the Yangjiang Qingzhou offshore wind power project. According to China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC), the ±500 kV flexible DC submarine cable, part of the sea cable centralized transmission project for the Qingzhou V and Qingzhou VII offshore wind farms, has successfully passed a voltage withstand test. This world-record cable, spanning over 180 kilometers, features the highest voltage level, largest transmission capacity, and largest conductor cross-section of any cross-linked polyethylene DC submarine cable globally. The test marks the completion of offshore converter station platform construction, confirming the entire line is ready for live operation.

The Qingzhou V and Qingzhou VII offshore wind farm cable transmission project, located in Yangxi County, Yangjiang City, Guangdong Province, is currently the world's highest voltage and largest capacity offshore wind power flexible DC transmission project. It is tasked with bundling and transmitting 2,000 MW of clean energy from the offshore wind farms. The project includes the world's first ±500 kV/2,000 MW flexible DC offshore converter station, named "Heart of the Sea Wind," two ±500 kV DC submarine cables, and an onshore centralized control center. The two submarine cables, each over 90 kilometers long, have been laid on the seabed, with a combined total length exceeding 180 kilometers.

With the successful completion of the voltage withstand test, the entire cable system is now certified for safe operation. This achievement has cleared the three core stages of the Qingzhou V and Qingzhou VII wind farms: power collection, conversion, and transmission. This energy artery, now resting deep beneath the sea, is poised to inject powerful green energy into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Once the entire project is fully operational, it is expected to deliver approximately 6 billion kilowatt-hours of green electricity annually to the load center. This is equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 5 million tons per year, providing a strong boost for the transformation and upgrade of Guangdong Province's energy structure. The project also serves as an engineering demonstration for large-scale, long-distance, centralized development and transmission of deep-sea offshore wind power in China.

It is understood that the Qingzhou V and Qingzhou VII offshore wind projects are located in the southern sea area of Yangxi County, Yangjiang City. The site is up to 90 kilometers from the coast, with water depths ranging from 45 to 53 meters. The total installed capacity reaches 2,000 MW, with plans to install 163 wind turbines, all of which have recently been completed.
