Churchill Downs Incorporated (CHDN) shares surged 5.35% in after-hours trading on Wednesday, following the release of the company's first-quarter 2026 financial results that exceeded analyst expectations.

The gaming and racing operator reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.21, significantly beating the consensus estimate of $1.00. Revenue for the quarter reached $663 million, slightly above the $661.99 million analysts had anticipated. Net income attributable to Churchill Downs rose 8% year-over-year to $83 million, while adjusted EBITDA climbed to a record $257 million.

Investors responded positively not only to the earnings beat but also to strategic announcements, including the company's agreement to acquire the intellectual property of the Preakness Stakes and Black-Eyed Susan Stakes for $85 million. The company also outlined plans to invest $180-$200 million in the Rockingham Grand Casino in New Hampshire, targeting a mid-2027 opening.
