JPMorgan Adjusts CHINA RE Target Price to HK$1.4, Keeps Neutral Stance

JPMorgan has released a research report stating that CHINA RE is one of the world's top eight reinsurance companies, holding a dominant position with nearly a 50% market share in mainland China. Its investment thesis is closely linked to global reinsurance underwriting trends. In the first quarter of 2026, the combined ratios for property and casualty reinsurance among major global peers ranged from 66.8% to 83.6%, significantly outperforming market concerns. The firm believes that CHINA RE's year-to-date decline of 23%, compared to the Hang Seng Index's 3% rise over the same period, represents an excessive underperformance relative to the broader market in recent months. JPMorgan has lowered its target price for CHINA RE from HK$1.6 to HK$1.4, while maintaining a "Neutral" rating. The report notes two structural factors that may limit a potential valuation re-rating: the profit momentum from its non-reinsurance business segments, which account for 13% of pre-tax profit, has low comparability with global peers; and the structure of the company's domestic reinsurance contracts limits profit sharing from large-scale reinsurance operations.
