Amid market volatility driven by geopolitical uncertainty and a sustained influx of retail investors moving in and out of markets, leading online brokerage Charles Schwab (SCHW.US) reported second-quarter results that surpassed market expectations.

The financial report shows Charles Schwab's Q2 net revenue grew 21% year-over-year to $7.072 billion, exceeding analysts' average forecast of $6.92 billion. Adjusted net profit was $2.93 billion, a 32% increase, with adjusted earnings per share of $1.62, beating the average analyst estimate of $1.55. The net interest margin widened by 12 basis points sequentially to 3.00%, indicating a continued recovery in profitability.

Charles Schwab Chief Financial Officer Mike Weldetsky stated in a release, "Strong client engagement drove a year-over-year increase in company revenue during the second quarter." Data revealed that the firm's daily average revenue trades (DARTs) hit a record high of 11.9 million, a 57% year-over-year increase. Trading revenue also grew, rising 28% to $1.2 billion.

Concurrently, the company continued to attract significant fund inflows. Total net new assets for Q2 surged 61% to $118.7 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $111 billion. Core net new assets reached $119.8 billion, with June alone setting a monthly record of $62.7 billion in core net inflows—a 47% year-over-year increase. The period also saw 1.4 million new brokerage accounts opened, expanding the total client account base to 48 million.

In the second quarter, Charles Schwab benefited from the largest initial public offering in history—the June debut of SpaceX (SPCX.US). CEO Rick Wurster noted that due to intense retail investor focus on the event, that day ranked among the five busiest trading days in the firm's 55-year history.

Charles Schwab was one of five platforms listed in SpaceX's IPO prospectus as potential channels for retail investors to access shares, alongside Robinhood (HOOD.US), Fidelity Investments, SoFi Technologies, and Morgan Stanley's E*Trade. Clients on these platforms received at least one allocated share in the IPO.

Wurster previously remarked in an interview, "If you look back at all the market events we've experienced over the last 50 years, for SpaceX's IPO to be in the top five is truly incredible. I think the reason behind it is that retail investors can tangibly feel the level of innovation in the U.S. economy."

Wurster also mentioned that SpaceX attracted demand from a diverse range of retail investor groups, and Charles Schwab fielded approximately 140,000 client calls related to the SpaceX listing. Reports in early June indicated that Charles Schwab increased its IPO team size tenfold ahead of the SpaceX debut.

Furthermore, Charles Schwab officially launched its cryptocurrency trading platform, Schwab Crypto, for retail investors, enabling trading in Bitcoin and Ethereum. It also introduced a generative AI tool, Portfolio Insights, to help investors analyze portfolio performance.

The company's management stated that a diversified business structure, scale advantages, and ongoing product innovation supported this round of strong performance. The market will continue to monitor the sustainability of retail trading activity, the trajectory of the net interest margin, and whether the crypto business and AI tools can further drive medium- to long-term revenue growth.

It is worth noting that Charles Schwab indicated earlier this year that it might launch prediction market products strictly tied to financial events, as competitors including Robinhood and Interactive Brokers are benefiting from such offerings.
