On October 9, the Qinghai New-Type Power System Research Center, established by State Grid Qinghai Electric Power Company, was officially inaugurated.
The center comprises three research divisions covering multiple types of power sources, load and energy storage, and dual-carbon development, building a full-chain research system spanning "source-grid-load-storage-carbon," with a focus on tackling key technologies such as voltage stability of weak grids with large-scale solar-plus-storage integration and broadband oscillation monitoring and protection.
The Qinghai New-Type Power System Research Center coordinates with two major "data source platforms" — the Qinghai Smart Dual-Carbon Big Data Center and the Qinghai Clean Energy and Green Computing Power Dispatch Center — and uses the Guinan New-Type Power System Scientific Research and Demonstration Base as a "test factory," striving to build an integrated research system of "data analysis plus experimental verification" to drive the translation of research outcomes into on-site applications.
Qinghai is a nationally important region rich in clean energy resources.
As of now, the province's installed clean energy capacity has surpassed 80 million kilowatts, reaching 80.3686 million kilowatts, accounting for 91.96% of total installed capacity.
Among this, new energy accounts for 73.18% of installed capacity, and new energy generation represents 52.2% of the province's total electricity output, with the "dual-dominant" position of new energy in both installed capacity and generation continuing to consolidate.
Based on the high proportion of new energy in its power grid, Qinghai adheres to a dual-driven strategy of "reliable clean supply and high-level consumption within the province plus large-scale clean transmission beyond the province," achieving multiple independent innovation results in new-type power grids, intelligent dispatch, and digital empowerment.
However, in some areas, due to the lack of mature experience that can be directly referenced domestically or internationally, the construction of the new-type power system is gradually entering "deep waters" and "uncharted territory."
According to reports, the large-scale and high-proportion integration of new energy brings major opportunities for green energy and power development while also posing complex and severe challenges to the safe and stable operation of the power grid.
The establishment of this center is precisely a practical necessity to break through technical bottlenecks and seize the initiative in development.
"The center will focus on advancing research projects such as new energy development, application of new energy storage technologies, and calculation of power sector carbon emissions, and will continuously improve management mechanisms for new energy grid integration and consumption as well as power supply guarantee," said Chen Xue, Director of the Qinghai New-Type Power System Research Center.
She added that the center will prioritize technical topics including power source layout, grid planning, load management, energy storage application, and energy conservation and carbon reduction, providing referable practical experience for the construction of new-type power systems with a high proportion of new energy across the country.
