WMO: El Nino expected to peak in December

Monitoring by China's National Climate Center shows that a super-strong El Nino event officially formed in September 2026. The center expects sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific to keep rising over the next three months, peaking in late autumn or early winter. This El Nino event is expected to become the strongest since systematic monitoring began.

In September, sea surface temperatures across most of the equatorial Pacific were higher than the same period in normal years, with the warm water center in the eastern Pacific more than 3.0C above average.

The World Meteorological Organization said in its monthly Global Seasonal Climate Update released on October 8 that El Nino is expected to continue strengthening and peak in December. It is likely to push temperatures above average across most of the world and increase the risk of drought and flooding in different regions.

WMO Secretary-General Saulo said, "El Nino is firmly established and rapidly intensifying. The WMO predicts that its continuation through February 2027 is close to 100 percent likely, and it may become one of the strongest El Nino events since at least 1950."
