Northern Lights Project Expands CCS Network with Addition of Third CO2 Carrier

The Northern Lights joint venture has added a new liquefied CO2 carrier to its fleet to enhance the transport capacity of Europe's carbon capture and storage network.

The vessel, named "Northern Phoenix," was officially received in Bergen and will be used to support the scaling of cross-border CO2 transport under the Northern Lights project.

Designed specifically for transporting liquefied CO2, the ship will carry emissions captured by Yara to the Northern Lights receiving terminal at Øygarden, where the CO2 will be piped and stored beneath the seabed.

Tim Heijn, Managing Director of the Northern Lights joint venture, stated: "With our first two vessels already in operation, the 'Northern Phoenix' marks the next step in expanding our CO2 transport capacity. We look forward to continuing to grow our fleet to enable safe and reliable cross-border CO2 transport in Europe."

The Northern Lights project, which will begin injecting CO2 for permanent storage in 2025, is part of Norway's comprehensive CCS initiative known as "Longship."

The joint venture, owned by Equinor, TotalEnergies, and Shell, is developing infrastructure to transport and store industrial emissions from across Europe.

The project has already signed agreements with several companies, including Ørsted, Stockholm Exergi, and Inherit, as well as Yara.

Northern Lights announced that the new vessel will undergo final preparations and commissioning before entering service to support the launch of commercial cross-border CO2 transport operations.
