The Global New Energy Vehicle Cooperation and Development Forum (GNEV2026) convened in Shanghai from August 19 to 21, hosted by Chebai International under the theme "New Paths for Global Cooperation in the Automotive Industry." At the event, Shalini Palmer, Global Vice President of Automotive at Analog Devices, delivered a keynote address.

Palmer highlighted that the world has witnessed the unprecedented scale and velocity of China's automotive and electric vehicle achievements over the past decade. Today, China possesses the most dynamic and well-established automotive ecosystem globally, a result of sustained investment, relentless engineering discipline, and an execution speed that has consistently exceeded industry expectations.

She observed that China's automotive market is now transitioning into its next phase, with domestic manufacturers not only achieving remarkable success at home but also expanding into Europe, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, some of the fastest-growing automotive markets worldwide. This shift from local ambition to global aspiration represents the next major opportunity and challenge.

Palmer emphasized that achieving global success is not merely a matter of scaling up domestic achievements; it presents a fundamentally different kind of challenge. She pointed out that automakers face distinct safety and battery compatibility regulations, varied trade policies and market access rules, and diverse supplier ecosystems in each region, all of which require building or integrating from the ground up. For electric vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems, there are also differing climate and durability requirements. In short, there is a considerable gap between being a successful local supplier and becoming a global leader.

In closing, Palmer proposed three action initiatives. First, engage with strategic partners early and proactively. Collaborations with leading Chinese EV manufacturers on intelligent battery management exemplify how early engagement can lead to first-to-market global innovations, with further opportunities in battery efficiency and safety. Second, deepen cooperation on standards and technology development. Faster regionalization and higher quality are not contradictory, they can reinforce each other if foundational standards are co-developed from the outset rather than patched post-hoc. Third, establish a structured and secure framework for collaborative problem-solving. Partnerships are built on trust, making it essential to ensure transparency in data sharing, intellectual property protection, and co-creation of new IP.
