The inaugural prescription for the newly approved implantable brain-computer interface (BCI) system for hand movement compensation, named NEO, was issued in Shanghai on July 13th, followed by the world's first implantation surgery performed at Huashan Hospital affiliated with Fudan University.

Following screening and evaluation by a multidisciplinary team based on the product's approved indications, the patient received the implant. The NEO system works by capturing and decoding epidural EEG signals to identify movement intent, establishing a communication pathway between the brain and an external functional compensation device, thereby assisting in hand grasping and improving self-care capabilities.

The journey from the world's first regulatory approval to the world's first prescription involved seamless collaboration between national and Shanghai municipal authorities, enabling the efficient completion of initial production, hospital equipment deployment, patient screening, and inclusion in commercial health insurance within a mere four months.

As the pioneering medical institution, Huashan Hospital provided the crucial clinical setting for this advanced technology's transition from research to practice. The hospital completed its medical insurance price filing on April 28th and subsequently advanced equipment installation, patient screening, and pre-operative assessments, culminating in the recent first implantation.

This rapid progress was also facilitated by proactive and coordinated regulatory support. Drug regulatory authorities leveraged a full-chain service platform for BCI medical devices, employing strategies like early engagement, tailored guidance for enterprises, and integrated research-review processes to accelerate the market entry of innovative products.

Once the product enters the hospital, ensuring clinical safety and standardized application becomes the next critical step. Shanghai's health authorities are strengthening the management of BCI-related clinical trials and applications, increasing support through scientific and technological programs, expanding application scenarios, and developing usage standards and operational protocols to support the orderly development of advanced medical technologies and treatments.

Cost coverage is pivotal for ensuring patients can truly access such cutting-edge technology. The NEO system has already been included in Shanghai's "Hu Hui Bao" supplementary health insurance. The municipal medical insurance department will continue monitoring the product's clinical use, streamlining processes for consumables listing and reimbursement settlement, dynamically collecting feedback from medical institutions and patients, accumulating real-world clinical data, and refining payment policies.

As clinical applications gradually expand, standardized training continues, and payment guarantee mechanisms improve, this innovative technology is poised to reach more medical institutions.
