SpaceX (SPCX.US) has unveiled plans to construct a groundbreaking new Starship launch facility along the southern coast of Louisiana, with an estimated investment of $100 billion. This ambitious project is designed to significantly expand the company's heavy-lift rocket capabilities and marks a pivotal step in its long-term infrastructure strategy.
The announcement was made jointly by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and senior SpaceX executives on Tuesday. The new site, located in the Pecan Island region, spans approximately 125,000 acres (roughly 506 square kilometers) of coastal land. Once operational, it will become SpaceX's third potential Starship launch location, complementing its existing operations in South Texas and its under-development site at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Currently, Starship manufacturing and launches are primarily conducted in South Texas, with the Florida facility serving as the second designated launch site.
SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell described the project as "unprecedented," emphasizing that it will transform technologies once relegated to the realm of science fiction into tangible reality. The announcement comes on the heels of SpaceX's record-breaking IPO in June, which was the largest in history, as the company now enters a phase of massive infrastructure expansion.
Beyond the new Starship base, SpaceX has already initiated construction of a chip manufacturing facility, dubbed "Terafab," in Grimes County, Texas. This facility is integral to CEO Elon Musk's broader vision of vertical supply chain integration and the development of orbital data centers. Musk has set aggressive long-term targets for Starship, aiming for multiple launches per day once the system reaches full maturity. Expanding the number of launch sites will provide SpaceX with greater operational flexibility to increase Starship's flight frequency, though the rocket has only completed two launches so far this year.
The strategic location of the Louisiana base is particularly critical for SpaceX's future space-based data center plans. From this site, Starship can launch southward over the Gulf of Mexico and traverse Earth's polar regions, enabling more efficient deployment of satellites into near-polar orbits. SpaceX has proposed an extraordinarily ambitious initiative to eventually build a satellite constellation of up to one million data center satellites, a significant portion of which are expected to be positioned in these near-polar orbits.
Additionally, the availability of natural gas resources near Pecan Island was a key factor in SpaceX's site selection, as it can provide the necessary propellant for Starship operations. According to the Louisiana government's development plan, the new facility will feature five launch complexes, each equipped with two launch pads, effectively providing up to ten launch pads in total. The base will also include propellant production facilities, power generation infrastructure, Starship processing facilities, and residential areas for SpaceX employees and their families.
Construction is scheduled to commence in 2027, with the first Starship launch from the site anticipated in 2029. Shotwell also hinted at the potential for building an airport in the region in the future, projecting that the project could generate approximately 3,000 to 10,000 local jobs. As SpaceX's business portfolio continues to expand, Starship is expected to become the company's most crucial launch platform across its entire rocket lineup.
In the near term, Starship will be utilized to deploy larger, upgraded versions of Starlink satellites, thereby enhancing the capacity of SpaceX's existing satellite internet system. Looking further ahead, Starship is tasked with two key missions: the deployment of orbital data centers, slated to begin as early as 2027, and the execution of NASA's crewed lunar landing mission, which aims to transport astronauts to the Moon's surface by 2028 at the earliest.
On Tuesday, SpaceX also completed what is expected to be its final Falcon 9 Starlink launch mission from Florida. According to the company's roadmap, future Falcon 9-based Starlink missions will be consolidated in California, while Starlink launches from Florida will gradually transition to Starship once it becomes fully operational.
The Pecan Island site was previously owned by ExxonMobil (XOM.US) for several decades before being returned to the Louisiana government as part of a settlement agreement in a coastal land loss lawsuit. With SpaceX's arrival, the company has committed to collaborating with state authorities on large-scale coastal ecosystem restoration efforts, including wetland preservation, wildlife habitat protection, and enhanced storm surge defenses.
Overall, the $100 billion Louisiana Starbase represents far more than a new rocket launch facility; it is a cornerstone of SpaceX's strategy to build next-generation space infrastructure centered around Starship. If Musk's ambitious plans for high-frequency Starship launches, a million-satellite data center constellation, and orbital data centers come to fruition, SpaceX's demand for launch capacity will vastly exceed current levels. Establishing three Starship bases across Texas, Florida, and Louisiana will provide the foundational infrastructure necessary to dramatically increase launch frequency in the years ahead.
