A community sports festival in Guizhou province has officially commenced, marking the start of a province-wide fitness initiative for residents. The launch ceremony for the 2026 Guizhou Provincial Community Sports Games was held at the Celebration Square of the Zunyi Sports Culture Park, with over 200 participants from 20 teams across Zunyi's counties and districts in attendance.

In the coming months, a series of accessible and engaging neighborhood sporting events will be rolled out across communities in every county and district of the province, bringing the joy of exercise right to residents' doorsteps. As a flagship mass-participation event designed to bridge the "last mile" of public fitness in Guizhou, the Community Sports Games are organized with the core principles of being community-oriented and serving the people. The 2026 edition has undergone adjustments and upgrades, with the Community Sports Games and the "Family Olympics" now established as two separate event categories.

The Community Sports Games are no longer limited to family-based teams. All healthy residents living and working in Guizhou can now form teams freely across different households and buildings, emphasizing neighborhood interaction and broad public participation. This aims to foster closer community ties, build consensus, and promote a deeper integration of national fitness with public health.

Fun Competitions Commence Amidst Lively Neighborhood Atmosphere

The festivities began at 8:30 AM with a warm-up segment. Performances including Latin dance, street dance, Tai Chi, and drumming quickly energized the crowd. Three family representatives read out a national fitness initiative on-site, calling on residents to proactively step out of their homes, engage in sports, adopt healthy lifestyles, and use exercise to promote harmony and well-being.

Following the ceremony, competitions and experiential activities were in full swing from 9:30 AM until noon. The event featured five team competitions: vertical marathon, family tug-of-war, board shoe racing, fun basketball, and a joyful "fish-catching" game. A "Daily Sports Games" fun experience zone was also open simultaneously. Each team included adult men, women, and children, testing both athletic ability and team coordination.

On the vertical marathon course, pairs of participants raced side-by-side up staircases in a test of endurance. The tug-of-war area at the center of the square was the liveliest spot, with cheers of encouragement echoing constantly. Teams of 12, comprising both adults and children, gripped the rope tightly, leaning back with determination in every pull. On the board shoe racing track, participants chanted in unison to coordinate their steps; occasional stumbles were met with laughter and quick recovery. Inside the fun basketball arena, adult male players were tasked only with passing, leaving scoring opportunities to female players and children, resulting in a lively mix of offense, defense, laughter, and applause. The newly added joyful fish-catching game proved highly popular, with adults and children alike splashing and laughing, full of lively fun.

Beyond the main competitions, the "Guizhou Village Super Carnival - Daily Sports for Health" fun experience zone was also crowded. Eight free activities were open to all spectators without registration: penalty shootouts, soccer bowling, ring toss with soccer balls, shuttlecock kicking challenges, ball-juggling challenges, blind shooting challenges, and Cuju (ancient Chinese football) experiences. Participants queued to try each activity, collecting a stamp for every completed challenge, with a full set of stamps redeemable for commemorative souvenirs.

"Before, we lived in the same building but didn't even know each other's names. To form a team for this competition, we created a group chat, and suddenly the neighborhood felt much closer," said Chen Ganbin from Dalian Road Community in Huichuan District. He expressed that meeting new neighbor friends was more rewarding than winning, and they now plan to exercise together regularly. He attended with his wife and two children, and the whole family enjoyed themselves immensely. "Having so many fun sports activities right at our doorstep is great. It keeps the kids off their phones and gets us all moving—it's a win-win."

Flexible '7+N' Event Format to Crown Provincial Champions in October

According to a relevant official from the Guizhou Provincial Social Sports Management Center, the open category of the 2026 Guizhou Community Sports Games adopts a "7+N" event format. The provincial finals will feature seven fixed events: vertical marathon, family tug-of-war, board shoe racing, fun basketball, fun soccer relay, team table tennis, and team badminton. The "N" represents optional events, allowing cities, prefectures, counties, and districts to add popular local specialties based on community preferences, balancing fun and participation.

The event will progress in three stages. Site planning for preliminary rounds has been completed. Site-level and sub-station selection competitions will be held from May to September, with the provincial finals scheduled for October in Huichuan District, Zunyi. The finals will award certificates and medals to the top three individuals in solo events. Team events will rank first, second, and third based on team points, with plaques awarded. The event will also recognize awards for excellent organization, sportsmanship, outstanding sites, and outstanding competition zones.

Notably, various sports-for-the-people services will accompany the event. On-site, there will be scientific fitness guidance stations and national physical fitness monitoring areas. Social sports instructors will provide skill guidance for activities like square dancing, health qigong, and street dance. Staff from the Provincial Sports Science Research Institute will offer free physical fitness tests and explain scientific exercise principles. Additionally, a business promotion and惠民 (benefit-the-people) exhibition area was set up, where local businesses and specialty vendors offered various products and food, allowing participants to enjoy leisure and consumption alongside sports, promoting the integrated development of sports with culture, tourism, and commerce. Subsequent site events are also expected to include related惠民 services, delivering professional sports services directly to residents.

Igniting Community Sports Vitality to Strengthen the Foundation of a Healthy Guizhou

"This sports festival innovatively builds a community sports brand for mass participation, using the 'community' as the unit and the 'family' as the base point, deeply integrating sports competition with family and neighborhood warmth," said He Jiaqin, Party Secretary and Director of the Zunyi Education and Sports Bureau, in a speech. "The Provincial Sports Bureau's decision to host the Community Sports Games launch ceremony in Zunyi reflects trust and support for Zunyi's sports work, and is even more an encouragement and spur for us. We will seize this opportunity to fully ensure excellent event services and support, carefully build a platform for exchange and display, and ensure the games are safe, orderly, and spectacular, allowing every participant to sweat, have fun, and, through interaction, bring neighbors closer and strengthen community bonds."

Communities are the basic units of social governance and the "last mile" for national fitness. A representative from the Provincial Sports Bureau stated that hosting the Community Sports Games is not merely about organizing a few competitions. It is about using the events to build platforms for neighborhood interaction, making communities more cohesive and vibrant. In the future, Guizhou will continue to deepen grassroots mass sports, constantly improve the public service system for national fitness, enable more residents to enjoy quality sports services close to home, and solidify the public foundation for building a Healthy Guizhou.
