WeChat is significantly expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities by adding new entry points for its native AI assistant, Xiao Wei, across several high-frequency usage scenarios. This brings the total number of AI access points within the app to 16. The new features are currently in a controlled rollout phase, meaning only a randomly selected group of users can see them initially.
One of the new additions is an AI summary tool for official account updates. On the subscription messages page, a Xiao Wei icon and an "AI Summary" button now appear at the far left of the "Frequently Viewed" section. By tapping this, Xiao Wei will automatically compile a digest of recent updates from the user's frequently read accounts, making it easier to scan and absorb key information. Additionally, an "AI Summary" option has been added to the bottom of individual article pages to help users quickly grasp the core content of what they are reading.
Another feature introduces AI commentary for the Moments feed. Users can now long-press on text within a friend's post to trigger an "AI Comment" button. The AI will then analyze the content and generate a selection of different comment styles for the user to choose from.
The chat interface has also been upgraded with an "AI Process" option that appears when viewing images. This allows users to perform tasks such as beautifying, extracting information from, or modifying photos directly within the chat window without leaving the app.
Beyond these three main entry points, WeChat is also testing other AI functions on a smaller scale. For instance, an "AI Write" button now appears in the bottom right corner when uploading images to the Moments publishing page. After the user uploads a photo, Xiao Wei will interpret the image and instantly generate multiple draft captions. Once selected, the caption is filled into the post automatically, eliminating the need for copy-pasting.
The "Scan" feature now includes a "Photo to AI" visual question-and-answer function. After taking a photo, Xiao Wei will identify the content and offer follow-up questions, such as recognizing a brand. For packaging in foreign languages, the interface provides options like "Translate," "Extract Text," and "Summarize Image Content," allowing users to complete recognition, translation, and further inquiries within a single conversation.
A new "Command" feature has been added to the chat input box. Users can press and hold the input field to speak, then slide their finger to the "Command" option that appears at the bottom. After releasing, the AI will interpret the user's intent and generate a message suitable for the current chat context, which can be sent directly. This function also supports polishing expressions, translation, and drafting messages on the user's behalf.
WeChat has also optimized its transfer function, adding a new method for sending money to a bank card or mobile phone number. If the recipient is not nearby, users can navigate to the "+" icon in the top right corner, select "Receive/Pay," and then choose "Transfer to Bank Card or Mobile Phone." After entering the recipient's details, the transfer can be completed. It is important to note that the recipient must have the "Allow transfers via phone number" setting enabled beforehand. For in-person transactions, users can still use the collection QR code or the "Face-to-Face Red Packet" option under their own QR code.
In other updates, WeChat has confirmed that the "You have withdrawn a message" notification text can now be deleted from the user's chat history after a message is retracted. This feature is gradually being rolled out to both iOS and Android users. Furthermore, WeChat has officially stated that it will never introduce a secondary editing feature for Moments posts, citing that the ability to repeatedly refine content would turn casual sharing into a "business operation." Instead, the official tip for users who make a mistake is to delete the post immediately, which will reveal a "Re-edit" button. Tapping it restores the original text and images, allowing for quick corrections and a fast repost.
