High-Leverage Speculation Backfires as US 'Situational Awareness' AI Hedge Fund Sees Assets Plummet by Roughly $350 Billion

Silicon Valley AI thought leader Leopold Aschenbrenner's hedge fund, Situational Awareness, has recently faced a margin call and forced liquidation after heavy bets on semiconductor and AI stocks collapsed, compounded by a massive 400% leverage ratio. The fund's assets under management plummeted from a peak of $450 billion to roughly $100 billion in just days, a decline of over 70%.

Insiders have disclosed that under immense pressure from forced selling, Aschenbrenner was compelled to sell off his entire public market leveraged stock positions—including stakes in SK Hynix and CoreWeave, which had recently seen steep declines—at a discount to Citadel. According to analysis, roughly two-thirds of the fund's assets were previously allocated to long and short stock positions in public markets, with the remainder invested in private equity stakes in unlisted AI startups like Anthropic.

Wall Street analysts have noted that the rapid collapse of Situational Awareness is a typical microcosm of the extreme volatility accompanying the current AI investment boom. Several financial trading experts have stated that the fund's use of extremely high leverage for speculation, in the absence of mature risk management experience, triggered a liquidity crisis entirely consistent with market principles. Jerry Diao, head of a financial advisory firm, analyzed that while investor long-term views on the AI industry may have some rationale, traders in public secondary markets must always guard against the severe risks of short-term liquidity and valuation corrections.

The 24-year-old Aschenbrenner, a former researcher at OpenAI who gained fame in Silicon Valley in 2024 after publishing a macro outlook report titled "Situational Awareness," raised $225 million in seed funding in July of the same year to launch his eponymous hedge fund. However, the industry has long harbored widespread doubts about his asset management capabilities. Public records show that prior to founding the hedge fund, Aschenbrenner had no experience in secondary market asset management, having previously worked at a foundation linked to the now-bankrupt crypto platform FTX. Additionally, he was dismissed from OpenAI for allegedly violating policies by improperly sharing internal confidential information.

Market analysis suggests that while Situational Awareness had previously generated substantial gains riding the tech bull market, current capital market pricing of AI concepts often overlooks risks such as neglected real corporate profitability, high R&D expenditures, and intensifying industry competition. As the semiconductor sector corrects and high-leverage risks are concentratedly released, such speculative models, which blindly chase tech concepts and excessively utilize financial leverage, are facing severe market scrutiny.
