OpenAI's Chief Financial Officer, Sarah Friar, addressed employees during an all-hands meeting on Wednesday, indicating that the artificial intelligence lab is on track for a public listing in 2027. However, she noted that an earlier market debut could materialize if business performance continues to strengthen.
Friar explained to staff that an initial public offering represents a significant milestone rather than a final destination, serving as another avenue for capital acquisition. She highlighted that the company recently secured $122 billion in March, which has provided substantial operational flexibility.
The company submitted a confidential IPO filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in June, though no specific timeline for the public offering has been officially disclosed. In a parallel move, primary competitor Anthropic also filed confidentially with regulators in June and has already initiated preliminary discussions with potential investors.
Addressing concerns during Wednesday's meeting, Friar reassured employees that Anthropic's potential earlier entry into the public market is not a cause for worry. She acknowledged that Anthropic might unveil its confidential documents within the coming weeks, potentially listing as soon as September, but emphasized that OpenAI is pursuing its own strategic path.
