On June 30th, the Xi'an to Shiyan high-speed railway officially commenced operations. Once, the towering Qinling range stretched for thousands of miles, separating the lands; today, the journey from the ancient capital to the river city can be completed in as little as 2 hours and 41 minutes, turning a formidable barrier into a thoroughfare. This new steel artery overcomes geographical obstacles, shrinks distances in time and space, and injects fresh momentum into regional coordinated development.
This year marks the beginning of the 15th Five-Year Plan period. China's national railway authority is fully implementing the key railway construction tasks outlined in the plan's framework. Expanding the Network, Unleashing Development Potential
The completion of a new line revitalizes an entire region.
"The Xi'an-Shiyan high-speed railway not only draws a straight line on the map but also redraws the transportation landscape between Northwest and Central China," observers noted. On June 30th, with the departure of trains G3966 and G3969 from Xi'an East Station and Shiyan East Station respectively, the Xi'an to Wuhan high-speed rail corridor was fully connected, redefining the temporal and spatial distance between these two major economic zones.
Spanning 257 kilometers with a design speed of 350 km/h, the Xi-Shi line, which traverses the Qinling ecological barrier, features bridges and tunnels accounting for over 90% of its length. Six new stations, including Xi'an East and Lantian, opened with the railway, bringing counties like Lantian, Shanyang, and Yunxi into the high-speed rail era.
As a key component of the national "Eight Vertical and Eight Horizontal" high-speed rail network, this line adds a crucial stroke to building a more efficient and dense railway network in central and western China. It also fosters closer integration between the Guanzhong Plain and the Middle Yangtze River urban clusters. On June 29th, the Yichang to Xingshan high-speed rail began comprehensive trial operations. Once open, it will link the Zhengzhou-Chongqing and Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu along-Yangtze lines, adding a rapid connection to the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
On June 1st, China's northernmost high-speed rail line, the Harbin to Yichun railway, entered the testing phase. Traversing permafrost regions, it provides a significant practical model for high-speed rail construction in high-latitude, severely cold areas, aiding the comprehensive revitalization of Northeast China.
On May 30th, track-laying officially commenced on the Chengdu-Chongqing Middle Line high-speed railway, embedding 585 kilometers of rail into the land of Sichuan and Chongqing, bolstering the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle.
On May 25th, the Xiong'an to Shangqiu high-speed rail initiated full-line through-running tests, further shortening the distance between the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Central Plains urban agglomerations, accelerating the flow of talent, resources, and opportunities.
Progress continues on multiple fronts: all 149 bridges on the Chongqing-Wanzhou line have been connected, and all 56 tunnels are through; track-laying is complete on the Nanchang-Jiujiang line; the Chaohu-Ma'anshan intercity railway has begun static acceptance checks... In the first half of the year, national railway fixed-asset investment reached 363.2 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 2.1%. This year, the railway sector has prioritized technological innovation, focusing on smart, green, and high-quality construction, and accelerating the application of new technologies, processes, and equipment. From hub stations and cross-river tunnels to mountain bridges and station renovations, innovative achievements are emerging, and intelligent equipment is being deployed, injecting continuous momentum into railway construction.
In early summer, the Nanjing North Station construction site is a hive of activity with cranes, machinery, and vehicles. Different from traditional sites, it features a crew of "robot coworkers." The station's Phase 2 project, integrating rail and metro construction, has created one of the widest and deepest foundation pits in Jiangsu, reaching 26.7 meters. Contractors employ a "Beidou + 5G" automated monitoring system that scans continuously, detecting every millimeter of displacement or degree of tilt.
The Phase 3 project at Nanjing North Station pioneered an "intelligent template factory" that enables customized, batch production of formwork with high precision. Technical personnel note that the equipment can process a single template in one minute, with a daily peak capacity exceeding 2,000 square meters.
Innovation extends beyond stations.
Beneath the Yangtze River, a world-class project advances steadily. The Chongtai Yangtze River Tunnel, at 14.25 kilometers, is a core control project for the Shanghai-Chongqing-Chengdu line's Shanghai-Nanjing section. It is currently the world's largest and longest high-speed rail river-crossing tunnel under construction by the highest standards. In March, the domestically developed high-speed rail tunnel boring machine, "Linghang Hao," completed the 11.18-kilometer underwater section. This machine integrates nine smart construction technologies, including intelligent sensing and automated excavation. The project team established a closed-loop control system, enabling the machine to advance with millimeter-level precision, setting a world record for monthly progress in a 15-meter diameter tunnel.
Innovation also addresses renovation challenges. For the Beijing Station canopy renovation, which had to proceed without halting operations, the project team innovatively used a "BIM + 3D scanning + digital twin" smart construction system. This allowed for millimeter-level detection and precise reinforcement of the existing structure. Trains and passenger flow continued uninterrupted while the renovation proceeded overhead.
At the Chongqing Science City Station on the Chengdu-Chongqing Middle Line, the first fully prefabricated canopy beam in China was successfully installed. The project innovatively applied technology for curved, irregular prefabricated components and a fully prefabricated beam-column-slab canopy system. This approach allows all components to be factory-made and assembled on-site, significantly reducing high-altitude work, shortening construction time, and lowering environmental impact. BIM technology and real-time intelligent monitoring were used throughout the process, providing a model for green and rapid station construction.

In Shaanxi, high-speed rail construction proceeds vigorously. Since the Xi'an-Chongqing line's Xi'an-Ankang section entered testing, railway authorities have simulated operational conditions to comprehensively test and optimize tracks, roadbeds, bridges, tunnels, power supply, signaling, communications, and passenger service systems. This process identifies and rectifies issues, laying a solid foundation for the line's opening.
Underground in Guangdong, work on the Guangzhou Station to Guangzhou South Station connecting line proceeds intensively. As the tunnel boring machine advances, technicians monitor data platforms in real-time to ensure optimal performance. Facing complex conditions, construction teams work in 24-hour shifts, meticulously managing every process step to safeguard project safety.
Across Xinjiang, frontier railway construction emphasizes precision. The local railway group has established a full-process traceability mechanism, from raw material inspection to project completion. For critical structures like bridges and tunnels, advanced non-destructive testing ensures hidden工程质量. Multiple rounds of strict sampling are conducted for all building materials, with any substandard materials immediately removed to prevent quality risks at the source.
Across the vast railway network, construction teams tackle challenges with targeted strategies. Refined control mechanisms are implemented on the ground, and difficult projects advance at full speed.
