SM Energy Co shares tumbled 6.63% in post-market trading, following the company's release of second-quarter 2026 financial results and a debt redemption announcement.

For the quarter, SM Energy reported net income of $1,071 million, translating to basic earnings per share of $4.48. Pretax profit came in at $1,389 million, while income from operations reached $1,496 million. Despite these robust headline numbers, the stock moved sharply lower in the extended session.

In a separate move that appeared to be a positive corporate action, the company also announced the redemption of all $417 million outstanding 6.625% senior notes due 2027. The redemption, scheduled for September 4, 2026, will be at par plus accrued interest and will leave SM Energy with no senior note maturities until mid-2028. The market reaction, however, suggests investors may have been expecting even stronger results or guidance, or the positive earnings were already priced in ahead of the report.
