According to industry reports, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is currently soliciting feedback from its key partners on the feasibility of its medium- to long-term semiconductor capacity investment strategy. This strategy reportedly includes a plan to construct four new semiconductor fabrication plants, or fabs, in South Korea within the next five-year period.
The planned new facilities in South Korea are said to encompass the P5 and P6 fabs in Pyeongtaek, the first fab in Yongin, and the first fab in Gwangju. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. had previously announced an investment plan of approximately 400 trillion South Korean won for building two new semiconductor fabs in Gwangju. Concurrently, the development of the fab cluster in Yongin is also expected to be accelerated.
In a related development, SK hynix's Y1 and Y2 fabs in Yongin, along with its first fab in Gwangju, are projected to commence operations by 2030. This collective expansion is anticipated to contribute a total of seven new major semiconductor fabrication facilities to South Korea's manufacturing capacity in the medium term.
