The Nikkei 225 index experienced a volatile session on October 9, 2026, ultimately closing nearly unchanged with a marginal decline of 11.19 points (-0.02%), settling at 69,030.92. Although the index was pressured lower in early trading by negative news surrounding the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, it gradually stabilized in the afternoon and finished the week's trading at nearly flat levels.

AI and semiconductor-related stocks led the declines. SoftBank Group closed down 3.92% at 5,803 yen, with intraday losses reaching as much as 7% at one point. Kioxia fell 2.21% to 17,505 yen. According to reports, OpenAI disclosed that its annualized revenue for September was close to $50 billion, significantly below the $70 billion figure that had been widely circulated in the market, prompting investors to reassess valuation bubbles across the global AI supply chain and dealing a direct blow to related technology stocks. Market sources indicated that SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son has recently approached investors in Gulf regions including the UAE, aiming to raise as much as $100 billion in new capital to continue expanding his AI investment strategy.
