According to the "Weibo Q1 2026 Trending Topics Report," the share of entertainment-related topics on the main trending list from January to March 2026 saw a significant decrease of 23%. The current distribution stands at 31% for entertainment topics, 31% for social topics, and 38% for vertical niche topics, indicating a more balanced content structure. Concurrently, user consumption time on the trending topics page increased by 5% year-over-year, and interaction volume grew by 6%.
This shift is directly linked to the platform's introduction of new dimensions, such as "public attention" and "domain-specific attention," into its ranking algorithm. These metrics assess a topic's broader public influence and its professional resonance within specific fields, respectively, thereby providing more visibility for topics in verticals like technology, sports, and finance. The decline in entertainment topics on the main list in Q1 demonstrates the platform's proactive optimization of traffic distribution, signaling a steady move towards a more balanced and diverse trending ecosystem.
The guidance was further reinforced by a mechanism upgrade on April 28. Previously based on an algorithm of (search popularity + discussion popularity + dissemination popularity) x interaction rate, the platform has now added three major dimensions. Each new dimension serves a distinct purpose: public attention measures a topic's ability to break through specific groups and reach a broad audience; domain-specific attention evaluates the topic's volume and engagement from high-impact users within its field; content quality assesses aspects like authenticity, safety, timeliness, and real-time user feedback.
Leveraging the upgraded algorithm and content identification mechanisms, the platform now filters out highly similar bulk comments and reduces the exposure weight of posts with low relevance to trending topics. Furthermore, genuine user interaction is directly tied to a topic's ranking—when public engagement on a topic consistently declines, its ranking is dynamically adjusted downward, with the change process displayed on the landing page. These "removing the false and retaining the true" governance measures aim to reduce the space for malicious marketing and low-quality traffic, further safeguarding the credibility of the trending list and enhancing user experience.
Alongside the algorithm upgrade, Weibo has intensified governance of its trending content ecosystem. In response to user complaints about "clickbait," "mismatched titles and content," and "deliberately riding on hot topics," the report provides clear governance data: in Q1, the platform removed an average of 40 "misleading" trending terms daily and reduced exposure for 80 pieces of similar repetitive content daily.
Industry analysis suggests the core logic of this upgrade is to balance traffic with content value through iterative technological algorithms, promoting stable exposure channels for high-quality content and transitioning from a "traffic explosion" model to a "value-first" approach. Post-optimization, user experience shows positive feedback in the data, with last quarter's trending page consumption time up 5% year-over-year and interaction volume up 6%.
