Jul 27

1. Market Overview

The Hang Seng Index inched 0.12% higher to 24,993.77 shortly after the opening bell, hovering just shy of the psychologically important 25,000 level. The HS China Enterprises Index gained 0.16% to 8,284.45, while the Hang Seng Tech Index outperformed with a 0.38% advance to 4,647.30, suggesting a mildly risk-on start to the session.

Early trading interest clustered in precious-metal names amid firm bullion prices, sending gold miners to the top of the leaderboard. Select travel platform, construction machinery and consumer plays also attracted buyers, whereas energy majors and biotech shares lagged after recent strength.

5. Opening Summary

The Hang Seng Index is flirting with the 25,000 threshold after ticking 0.12% higher at the open, while the HSCEI and Tech gauges also posted modest gains. The early uptick reflects a cautiously constructive tone as investors weighed overnight gains on Wall Street against lingering global growth concerns.

Heavyweight tech counters added support: Alibaba and Tencent climbed over 1%, while Xiaomi, Meituan and JD.com followed with solid advances. Trip.com further brightened sentiment with a 3.8% pop, extending its recent strength on travel demand optimism. Baidu, Lenovo and Bilibili, however, slipped, tempering broader tech momentum.

The standout story is gold: Lingbao Gold, Chifeng Gold, Zijin Gold International and China Gold International all surged between 3–6%, propelling the precious-metals complex to the top of the sector charts. On the downside, oil majors CNOOC and PetroChina lost around 3% as crude prices retreated, dragging the wider energy space.

Beyond commodities, machinery maker Sany Heavy Industry and AI chip name DTech attracted early bids, while biotech names such as XtalPi and Zai Lab came under pressure. No large IPOs priced today, but traders will monitor the pipeline as sentiment stabilizes near the key 25,000 mark.
