According to an announcement, a mobile application previously named "Are You Alive" gained widespread attention online for its straightforward daily check-in feature designed to confirm users' well-being. This function effectively addressed common anxieties among individuals living alone, particularly the fear of emergencies going unnoticed. Following extensive public feedback, the platform has been officially upgraded and rebranded as "Are You There," a safety and companionship platform. It has been initially deployed for use in the Nanxing Subdistrict.
The upgraded "Are You There" platform maintains a senior-friendly design principle, featuring large fonts, a simplified interface, minimal required interactions, and high error tolerance. Elderly users can complete a seamless daily check-in using their smartphones. If a user fails to check in for two consecutive days, the system will automatically send an alert to their designated children or emergency contacts.
For elderly individuals without smartphones, the subdistrict administration and the platform have jointly introduced a physical "Safety Button." This is a small device that can be worn or kept within easy reach. In an emergency, pressing the button immediately notifies both family members and designated community safety officers.
Beyond technological tools, the Nanxing Subdistrict has established a five-tiered safeguarding mechanism involving the elderly individual, the application, family members, the community, and emergency services. The subdistrict maintains safety profiles for its elderly and solo-living residents. Based on backend data indicating missed check-ins or unusual statuses, grid managers and volunteers proactively conduct home visits or make phone calls. If an SOS alert is triggered, a community safety officer is required to respond within 5 minutes and coordinate a home visit within 15 minutes, simultaneously connecting with community health stations and emergency medical resources to ensure critical response times are met.
"As you grow old, your expectations aren't high. You just hope someone is thinking of you and that someone would know if something happened. For us, this isn't just an app; it's an added layer of security," said an interviewee, expressing a sentiment shared by many seniors.
A previous report highlighted the surge in popularity of an application named "Are You Alive," which claimed to use technology and services to safeguard individuals living alone. On January 10, the app topped the paid download charts on Apple's App Store. The following day, the official download price was adjusted from 1 yuan to 8 yuan.
The Apple App Store page listed the developer of the "Are You Alive" app as Yuejing (Zhengzhou) Technical Service Co., Ltd. Business registration information shows the company was established in 2025, is based in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, has a registered capital of 100,000 yuan, and its legal representative is Guo Mengchu.
