Wang Leehom Reveals Behind-the-Scenes Story with Unitree: A Midnight Bug Nearly Derailed the Show, Team Coded Through the Night to Save It

On the evening of August 19, Unitree Technology, dubbed the "first A-share humanoid robot stock," officially made its debut on the STAR Market. Following the listing, the company hosted a thank-you luncheon where singer Wang Leehom, seated alongside Unitree founder Wang Xingxing and Sequoia Capital's Neil Shen, took the stage to share his experience collaborating with the robotics firm.

In December 2025, six Unitree G1 humanoid robots appeared at Wang Leehom's Chengdu concert, dancing alongside the hit song "Full Power" in what was hailed as the world's first group dance performance by humanoid robots. Reflecting on that collaboration, Wang revealed a nail-biting moment: the robots initially danced flawlessly, but once they stopped moving, something went awry — the rhythm began to lag more and more. With the bug surfacing the night before the show, it seemed all their months of preparation might be wasted.

That evening, Unitree's engineering team hunkered down in the dark venue, pulling an all-nighter to write brand-new code on the spot, ultimately resolving the issue. The next day's performance went off without a hitch, and Elon Musk even shared the concert video on social media. Wang noted that when robots performed alone, they achieved zero mistakes, yet audiences sometimes felt disconnected because it was too perfect. But when humans and robots performed together in an alternating sequence, it became playful, visually striking, and sparked a unique chemistry.

"So perhaps, just as humans need robots, we may one day find that robots need humans too — at least in my stage experience, that's certainly been true," he remarked. Wang also jokingly lodged a light complaint against the Unitree team: "You all keep calling me Brother Leehom, Teacher Leehom, Uncle Leehom — it makes me feel old. Then I realized Xingxing is only 36, and the whole team consists of recent college graduates, so no wonder they're still full of energy after staying up all night."

Here is the full text of Wang Leehom's speech: More than a year ago, I walked into the Unitree office because I wanted to know if they could design a mechanical piano — one that could rise up, move around the concert venue, and get close to the audience. At that time, President Xing said, "We don't make pianos, but we make humanoid robots that can carry your piano around." Then he took me to watch their robots perform martial arts, kung fu, and backflips. I was thrilled in that moment and forgot all about the piano. I asked if they could dance — not just simple moves, not just for one song, but a full complex choreography for an entire concert, synced with a live band?

Chairman Wang thought for a moment and then said something I would hear him repeat often: "We've never done this before, but we definitely can." Later, I watched them strap motion capture sensors onto our choreographer, feeding thousands of movements into the robots' bodies and joints with incredible precision. At our first concert, the robots danced perfectly at the start, but once they stopped moving, things got strange — the tempo kept dragging. During the final rehearsal, I was about to break down. After months of preparation, this bug appeared the night before the show, threatening to undo everything. That's when the engineering team told me, "Let's try syncing the robots with the lighting system." I asked, "That's possible? With the lighting system?" They replied, "We've never done it, but we definitely can."

That night, the engineering team sat in the pitch-dark venue, coding through the night, extracting the time codes from our lighting system and feeding them into the robots. By the time they finished writing the code, it was almost time for the show to begin. Sure enough, they made it work. The next day's performance was flawless, and Musk reposted the video with a comment of "impressive." I think he saw how remarkable Unitree is. At that moment, both the tech and entertainment worlds went wild. Today, it's the financial world's turn to be stunned, acknowledging Unitree's prowess with the same word: impressive.

Throughout this process, I made a discovery I'd like to share: when robots dance alone, even with zero mistakes, audiences sometimes check out because it's too perfect. But when it's human, robot, human, robot, alternating together, it's fun, it's refreshing, and there's a real chemistry. So perhaps, just as humans need robots, we'll one day realize robots need humans too — at least in my stage experience, that's been true.
