SpaceXAI, under the leadership of Elon Musk, announced on Monday the introduction of its generative AI chatbot, Grok, into Microsoft's Excel spreadsheet software. Users can now obtain this Microsoft 365 add-in for free through the Microsoft Marketplace.

This plugin also supports Word and PowerPoint, signifying that Grok is now fully embedded across the core Microsoft Office applications. According to SpaceXAI, users simply need to describe their desired outcome in everyday language, and Grok will automatically handle the corresponding syntax and logic—such as calculating averages, sorting data, and auto-filling cells. These results are displayed directly in the formula bar, just like a standard edit.

Furthermore, users can select a specific range of cells and pose questions to Grok. The AI will then reference the specific data cells to provide answers and can automatically generate charts. The plugin also supports scenario testing and forecast re-runs, allowing users to test downside risk cases, re-run predictions, or complete month-end closing tasks without manually rebuilding spreadsheets.

The add-in can connect to external data sources, enabling users to instruct Grok to extract contextual information from recent emails or files stored in SharePoint or Google Drive.

From Standalone Chatbot to Embedded Office Assistant

Prior to this, Grok had already rolled out plugins for Word and PowerPoint in mid-June. On June 22nd, Grok was formally integrated into the Microsoft Office suite, allowing users to generate documents, presentations, and process spreadsheet data directly via text commands through a dedicated AI agent in the application sidebar.

This strategic move positions Grok as a direct competitor to Microsoft's own Copilot, highlighting the intense competition among tech giants for dominance in the enterprise AI office market. The release of Grok 4.5 further strengthens this strategy. This model was trained on tens of thousands of NVIDIA GB300 GPUs and can build complex Excel models within Grok Build that include web research and multi-sheet formulas. It can also utilize native shapes to draw complex charts in PowerPoint.

Regarding pricing, Grok 4.5 is offered at a rate of $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, providing a cost advantage compared to some competing products.
