Market Rotation Deepens: Three Key Investment Themes Emerging as A-Shares Consolidate

Recent trading sessions have seen the A-share market continue its consolidation phase, with the prevailing mood shifting notably toward caution despite the market retaining its underlying dynamism. This pullback in risk appetite reflects a scenario where investors, having swiftly banked profits from high-flying growth stocks, have not yet converged on a new consensus for aggressive positioning.

An interesting divergence has emerged within the technology sector, where robust industry fundamentals are juxtaposed against weakening trading performance. On one hand, the AI supply chain continues to validate its growth narrative, with overseas optical communications firms and computing power rental companies consistently surpassing expectations in earnings, orders, and guidance, thereby confirming strong demand for AI data centers, optical interconnects, and high-end computing. On the other hand, the sector's weekly rebound has lagged its fundamental strength, a discrepancy rooted more in trading structure than in industrial logic.

In contrast, the leading sectors have been driven by defensive themes and inflation-linked valuations. The strength in oil & gas, coal, and banking can be attributed to elevated oil price expectations due to recurring Middle East geopolitical tensions, improved cash flow prospects for resource companies, and the re-rating of low-valuation, high-dividend assets during this phase of reduced risk appetite. Similarly, the relative outperformance of agriculture and pharmaceuticals highlights the market's search for low-crowding, domestic-demand-resilient areas amid the growth stock correction. Overall, the market's sector logic is transitioning from a single-technology-led spillover to a more balanced configuration that retains a core technology narrative while being supported by dividend-yielding and defensive stocks, with pharmaceuticals and consumption rotating in as supplementary positions.

Looking ahead, we anticipate the market will remain in a phase of consolidation. While short-term fluctuations are possible, the probability of breaching previous lows is low. This is supported by a domestic liquidity and capital market policy environment that is more favorable than in the second quarter, an economy that has not lost momentum, and the presence of market stabilization mechanisms and long-term capital that mitigate systemic downside risks. The true constraint on the pace of any rebound is the crowded trading in tech stocks following their rapid surge and external pressures from interest rates and oil prices. Consequently, this is likely a period of "the main theme remains, but the rhythm is reset," rather than a definitive bearish turn.

From a strategic standpoint, we suggest investors pivot from a pure growth focus toward a more balanced approach. Defensive assets like high-dividend, energy, and banking stocks retain their allocation value amid rising external uncertainties. Concurrently, opportunities in the technology sector should be accumulated on dips, avoiding the temptation to chase rebounds at emotional peaks.

Looking forward, three key investment directions warrant attention.

First, energy security and dividend-yielding assets, including oil & gas, coal, and banking. The core investment thesis here is the stability of cash flows generated by mid-to-high oil price fluctuations and the defensive nature of low valuations.

Second, the selective, high-conviction areas within the AI hardware space. Focus should be on segments with verifiable mid-year earnings reports and order momentum, such as optical modules, switches, servers, PCBs, semiconductor equipment and materials, and HBM.

Third, pharmaceuticals and other sectors exhibiting domestic demand resilience. These areas offer low crowding and earnings potential, serving as a hedge against volatility in the technology sector.
